As a result of the amendment to the Saxon Freedom of Higher Education Act (SächsHSFG) which came into force in December 2020, the standard period of study for many students will be extended by one or two semesters due to the pandemic. This applies to students whose original standard period of study does not end until after the start of the summer semester 2020 and who were enrolled in the summer semester 2020 or the winter semester 2020/21. As the Studentenwerk Leipzig has already announced, this also means an extension to recipients’ BAföG entitlement by up to two additional semesters.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) recently clarified that students whose regular period of study ended with the summer semester 2020 will now be able to apply for BAföG retroactively for the winter semester 2020/21. As an exception, students whose regular period of study ended with the summer semester 2020 and who have not yet applied or applied late for BAföG can now apply for and receive BAföG benefits retroactively from the beginning of the winter semester 2020/21 (usually October 2020). Applications must be submitted to the Department for Grants at the Studentenwerk Leipzig by 30 April 2021 at the latest.

More information is available on the Studentenwerk Leipzig website.
